Requested move 4 May 2024[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: moved. It seems to me there is already consensus to move it to 2024 Rio Grande do Sul floods. The only opposition relies solely on WP:CRYSTALBALL and has, in this regard, already been properly refuted. Another requested move may be opened to seek consensus to rename the article to 2024 South Brazil floods. 2024 Brazil floods2024 Rio Grande do Sul floods – More specific title, in line with Portuguese article, factually correct, etc. Torimem (talk) 13:34, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support - It's the only state affected by these floods
Quake1234 (talk) 19:43, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Support - No brainer, as per nom and @Quake1234. ZionniThePeruser (talk) 21:44, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose i believe the article should stay the same as Brazil will most likely get more floods not just the one state.User:dubstar44
This doesn't make sense, we can't go around making predictions about what we think is gonna happen. Torimem (talk) 22:14, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It is not a prediction its a probability. Dubstar44 (talk) 22:21, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

So far, the floods are restricted to the state of Rio Grande do Sul with no sign of changing in the short term. 181.228.230.156 (talk) 22:53, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support, though I would like to note that if these truly are 1-in-80 year storms that Brazil is dealing with, it might be appropriate to keep it more general. This point will become more potent if the flooding spreads. Another alternative could be 2024 South Brazil floods, but at this moment it'd be unnecessary. ✶Quxyz 23:25, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Support, Quake1234 is correct. Wikipedia is not a crystal ball, so it's better if we change the title to the specific location the flooding is happening until it spreads to another state. ISumi76 (talk) 00:36, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Support It's the only state in Brazil that's being affected by the floods with nothing to indicate other states will be affected by them. Nintenga (talk) 04:06, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Comment I should address that another victim has been reported in the state of Santa Catarina, although I don't know if we should consider it as directly related to the floods that hit Rio Grande do Sul... Oltrepier (talk) 14:52, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
How about "2024 Southern Brazil floods" then? Glucoboy011 (talk) 18:51, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Glucoboy011: Sounds good, even though I won't oppose to the original proposal! Oltrepier (talk) 07:51, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Support Either change it to "Rio Grande do Sul" like mentioned or "2024 Southern Brazil floods", as it's unequivocally being only confined to the Southern region of Brazil. Plus, the current title is extremely generalized, as more floods might happen in Brazil this year. Glucoboy011 (talk) 18:58, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of Madonna donation[edit]

I've removed a paragraph about Madonna donation because that is a fake news invented by a gossip columnist. It hasn't been confirmed by anyone else including Madonnna and the government when consulted by the press. Also it wasn't a free concert, Madonna received R$17.5 millions in fees.

Flooding in Uruguay[edit]

The flooding is affecting Uruguay with about 700 displaced people,[1] and several rural schools have been shut down.[2] Can this be added to the article? Guayuru (talk) 07:35, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Added. -- Mikeblas (talk) 16:06, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Context?[edit]

What is it that flooded? A river? A system of rivers? A levee? Municipal waste water backup? Storm surge from the ocean or a large lake? It seems like this article is missing the most fundamental context of the topic it intends to cover. -- Mikeblas (talk) 15:40, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It makes sense to add more details and a chronology of events though it wasn't a single thing. Extreme precipitation from continuous heavy rain affected most of the state. 78% of cities were affected. The metropolitan area is located on a large drainage basin. A system of rivers, large lakes and levees flooded. Rain alone caused a lot of damage like landslides, bridge collapses, storm damage on buildings.

I would second the thoughts of Daniel Souza as it was a contribution of several factors that led to the ultimate issue of flood which caused damage and loss of life. Adding a chronological set of events would better explain why what happened happened. Jurisdicta (talk) 02:06, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please Include Samaritan’s Purse[edit]

Samaritan’s Purse had sent a B757-20PCF N783SP and a DC-8-72CF N782SP to helping.[3] 90.186.249.161 (talk) 20:36, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Uruguayan KC-130[edit]

While it's true that Brazilian ministry of defense refused the plane on the grounds of "lack of proper aerodromes" that information is false and is contradicted in the source articles by the Rio Grande do Sul representative which stated that other aerodromes were available in the state. Base Aérea de Canoas (BACO) is in the center of the floodings and still is operational. Further research show that the same plane landed earlier in Santa Maria and that an equal plane from Argentina landed on BACO. As a fact days later a KC-130 from Argentina landed on BACO. The ministry of defense also hinted that they didn't need the place because they had KC-390 and other planes meeting transport needs. So this is the real justification for refusing the Uruguayan airplane.
