Early life[edit]

Hwang Hyunjin was born in March 20, 2000 in Seoul, South Korea as an only child in his family. His family owns a dog named Kkami (Korean까미). As a child, he attended kindergarten in Las Vegas, Nevada where he used the English name Sam. Hwang got scouted on the street by JYP Entertainment scout team when he went shopping with his mother in his third year of middle school.[3]

In February 2019, Hwang Hyunjin graduated from School of Performing Arts Seoul .[4]

Career[edit]

2017–2018 : Pre-Debut & Debut with Stray Kids[edit]

He trained for around 1 year 6 months before debuting in Stray Kids. In 2017, he appeared in JYP survival show called Stray Kids, a show which allowed him to debut as Stray Kids member.[5]

Later, JYP Entertainment released all their performed song in the survival show as a pre-debut Stray Kids EP Mixtape, therefore "4419" was the first song, which he participated in the production process, to be officially released.[6][7]

Hyunjin officially debuted with Stray Kids on March 25, 2018 with EP I Am Not.[8] In this album, he also participated in the lyrics making of song "Mixtape #1".[c]

2023–present[edit]

In May 2023, Hyunjin attended Dua Lipa and Donatella's “La Vacanza” collection in Cannes.[10] In that event, he also met Troye Sivan who later collaborated with Hyunjin in one of his song.[11] In July 2023, he also attended "La Vacanza" pop-up store opening event.[12][13]

Other ventures[edit]

Endorsements[edit]

In 2021, Hyunjin alongside members Lee Know and Felix became the endorser for Italian luxury label Etro's unisex Earthbeat sneaker.[14]

Fashion[edit]

In July 2023, Hyunjin officially got appointed as a new Global Brand Ambassador of the Italian luxury house, Versace.[15][16] He is the first Korean Star to become a Versace global ambassador. His first step as the role is to front the Versace Holiday 2023 campaign, composed of images and videos, that launched in November of the same year.[17]

In May 2024, he made his Met Gala debut with Stray Kids as the guest of Tommy Hilfiger.[18]

Philanthropy[edit]

On February 16, 2023, it was reported that Hwang Hyunjin participated in donating ₩100 million (equivalent to $77,590 in 2023) through the international relief organization, The Promise, to aid the relief efforts following the earthquake in Turkey and Syria.[19] His contributions made him appointed as a member of the honors club on March 30th.[20] In 2024, to celebrate his birthday, he donated $100 million (equivalent to $75,220 in 2024) to the Snail of Love, a social welfare organization that provides hearing-impaired people with artificial cochlear surgery and hearing aids to help them find sound, supports social adaptation of hearing children, and provides education to improve public awareness.[21]
